Homestead Exemption Information

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of a special property tax exemption in Georgia, called the homestead exemption, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the filing procedures required to take advantage of it. As the new owner of a home in 2019 you must apply for this exemption – it is not automatic.

The homestead exemption provides the homeowner a reduced taxable property value provided that:

1) The home is occupied by the homeowner on January 1, 2020 and

2) The homeowner applies for the homestead exemption in the county where the property is located.

The deadline to file for homestead exemption in most Georgia counties is April 1, 2020.

We also offer additional information on our website which will provide you with detailed information on homestead exemption, as well as links to county information on the state’s website, and phone numbers for the county tax commissioner’s office.

*you cannot file homestead exemption on rental property, vacant land or on more than one property.

To file, you may need to provide the following:

Warranty deed book and page, proof of residence, social security number, driver’s license with correct address and car tag information.

We encourage you to contact your local county tax commissioner or tax assessor’s office or visit their website to confirm the filing details for your county and take full advantage of this exemption. We hope this timely reminder serves to assist you in reducing your property tax bill.
